Trance. House. Rock. Country. Jazz. Blues. Soul. Classical. Latin. One woman’s noise is another woman’s music. Once upon a time, we went to record stores to sift for new artists or albums. Now we click our mouses on a “play” button — over and over — until we find something we like. Then, we plug portable music players into computers, load ‘em up with tunes, and off we go (or we stay at our desk, headphones on, drowning out office noise). The way we listen to music may have radically changed in the last decade, but the song remains the same: We’re melodic creatures, responding emotionally and physically to the lull of a siren’s heartache or the strum of a guitar.
